Best Recipe apps

For the home cook to the gourmet-chef

  • Allrecipes.com: Dinner Spinner

Only have 15 minutes to make dinner? Or can't decide between chicken or fish? No matter what your situation, Dinner Spinner serves up hand-selected recipes that fit your dish type, taste and timetable. There's no need to search for recipes - the spinner presents you with options that you can choose from based on your preferences. It's beautifully designed and executed from the popular folks at Allrecipes.com.

  • Food Network

Alton, Giada, Ina and more. They're all there, ready for you to use and peruse them. The interface on the Food Network app is really top-notch: you can easily locate your favorite chef and then view his or her biggest hits (we thought Alton's Popover recipe looked simple and delicious and Ina's Chipotle Rosemary Roasted Nuts were very tasty). Our favorite tool is the "get recipes" feature, which serves up full-menu ideas that inspire festivities, fun and flippin' great fare.

  • Epicurious

Drawing from magazine classics like Gourmet (sigh) and Bon Appetit, this app dishes up reader reviews, ratings and recommended improvements. Armed with this knowledge, you can make a feast with whatever you have, whether it’s in your shopping cart or your pantry. Also included are menus for entertaining and special dietary restrictions.

  • Mario Batali Cooks!

Gwyneth Paltrow cooks with Mario so why shouldn't you? Indulge in the Italian recipes that made Chef Batali famous and while you're at it, pick up some of his special cooking techniques. Mario tours you through each region offering only the most authentic Italian fare.

  • BigOven

By putting thousands of recipes—including your own—at your fingertips for easier shopping and cooking, Big Oven saves you time and mental energy. You can even collect your favorite recipes into your own cookbook. Photos and user commentary add just the right dash of kitchen wisdom. Search by ingredients and get ideas about what to do with leftovers; the possibilities are endless.

  • Real Simple Recipes

Real Simple is just that. Tell the app how much time you have, what you are starting with (beef, seafood, vegetables, etc) and away you go. The app serves you a list of recipes that fit your requirements. What's best is that the photos and step-by-step directions are served up beautifully on your screen. The look and feel is so close to having a real cookbook that the app begs the question: "Are cookbooks a thing of the past?" We're not sure we can live without our glossy books, but we can picture your iPad sitting pretty on this kitchen stand.

  • Jamie Oliver: 20-Minute Meals

In classic Jamie Oliver-style, the app is beautifully done and easy to use with clearly marked tabs for ingredients and steps, and crisp, high-quality imagery and videos. Decide to invite the neighbors over to join you for dinner? With a click, you can turn the recipe from 2 servings to 4. You can even translate recipes into a shopping list organized by supermarket aisle. Now that’s good fast food.

  • Mark Bittman

Best-selling cookbook, How to Cook Everything, now in an app. Delicious, simple recipes and variations of your everyday basics with fresh ingredients, herbs and flavor. The 2000+ inviting recipes in this app will have your guests ooh-ing and ahh-ing before dessert even hits the table.
